The fire hazards of warehousing & logistics
Distribution centres and storage facilities present a distinct fire risk profile. High-rack and high-pile storage lets a fire climb vertically through racking far faster than ceiling sprinklers alone can reach, while large open floor plates allow flames and smoke to spread across thousands of square metres with few internal barriers. Mixed and unknown commodities — plastics, packaging, aerosols and palletised goods — raise the heat-release rate well above what general-purpose protection assumes.
Operational activity adds its own ignition sources: forklift and reach-truck traffic, battery-charging bays for electric MHE, packaging lines and the dust and idle pallets that accumulate in working aisles. Where flammable or combustible liquids are stored or decanted, the hazard escalates again and calls for dedicated measures. Getting the protection right starts with matching the system to the commodity class, storage height and rack configuration — not a one-size-fits-all layout.
The systems that protect a warehouse
Effective warehouse protection is layered. For high-bay storage, ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) sprinklers are engineered to deliver enough water from ceiling level to suppress a high-challenge fire, while in-rack sprinklers add protection inside the racking itself where storage height or commodity class demands it. These systems depend on adequate water supply, so correctly sized fire pumps and storage tanks are central to the design.
Early warning and containment complete the picture. Addressable fire alarm and detection systems — including aspirating or beam detection suited to high, open volumes — give occupants time to evacuate and trigger response. Smoke and heat venting helps keep escape routes and aisles tenable and clears products of combustion. Where flammable liquids are present, foam systems provide the right suppression medium, and passive fire protection, fire-rated doors and compartmentation limit how far a fire can travel. We also supply and install hose reels and cabinets and emergency exit and escape-route lighting for long internal travel distances.

Compliance with UAE Civil Defence
Warehouse and logistics buildings must satisfy the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice and obtain the relevant Civil Defence approvals — from design drawings and No Objection Certificates through to inspection and final sign-off. Storage occupancies have their own requirements driven by commodity classification, storage height and rack arrangement, so the protection scheme has to be justified, not assumed.
Adiga Fire handles the technical submissions and coordinates inspections so your facility clears Civil Defence cleanly. We supply genuine, certified products and carry out installation and commissioning to code — Adiga supplies, installs, commissions and maintains these systems; we are not a manufacturer.
Installation, commissioning & ongoing maintenance
From greenfield distribution centres to fit-outs and rack reconfigurations, our team delivers turnkey fire system installation and commissioning, with all fire-fighting equipment supplied and tested to specification. Because storage layouts change as stock and operations evolve, we keep your protection aligned with how the warehouse is actually used.
Live warehouses run year-round, so reliable upkeep matters. Our Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) cover scheduled inspection, testing and servicing of pumps, sprinklers, alarms and suppression systems to keep them compliant and inspection-ready. For practical pointers, see our warehouse fire safety guide and annual fire safety checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need ESFR or in-rack sprinklers for high storage?
It depends on your storage height, rack configuration and commodity class. ESFR ceiling sprinklers suit many high-bay layouts, but taller storage or higher-hazard commodities may require in-rack sprinklers as well. We assess your racking and goods and design the system to suit, in line with the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice.
We store flammable liquids in our warehouse — what extra protection is needed?
Flammable and combustible liquid storage typically calls for foam-based suppression alongside appropriate detection, bunding and segregation. We supply, install and maintain foam systems matched to the materials you hold, and confirm the right specification for your Civil Defence approval.
Can you keep our existing warehouse systems compliant without a full replacement?
Yes. In most cases we can inspect, test and service your existing pumps, sprinklers, alarms and suppression systems under an Annual Maintenance Contract, and recommend targeted upgrades only where the layout, storage or code requirements have changed.
